Chapter Nine

They got the go ahead to get Agnes’ things from her house. There were conditions, though. Said conditions being that Conners had to be there with them.

It was a hassle. He told them he was in the middle of paperwork and refused to give them a conservative estimate of when he could meet with them.

Lady couldn’t really argue, though. She wasn’t about to go stomping through a crime scene unattended. She didn’t want to. Sitting parked on the curb, staring at the yellow police tape was uncomfortable enough.

There was a police car in the driveway. Theoretically, he could have escorted them in to get Agnes’ things. Conners didn’t trust him, though. Lady could understand that. It was risky enough that he was letting him guard the crime scene at all given the track record of the others on the police force.

While they were waiting, Lady took the opportunity to call Crispin and let him know what was going on. Agnes hadn’t given her the okay to do so, but it felt weird to keep all of this to herself for much longer. Surely, it would be on the news soon if it wasn’t already.

Crispin was as horrified as she had expected him to be. He didn’t ask many questions. He just listened, something that he had always been good at. “Is there anything I can do to help?” he asked when she had told him all she knew.

“I don’t know. I’ll have to get back to you on that. Right now we’re at her house picking up some of her things.”
